Shunoku Myoha - Shunoku Myoha

Japanese: 春屋妙葩 - しゅんおくみょうは
Shunoku Myoha - Shunoku Myoha

A monk of the Muso school of the Rinzai sect during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. He was known by the names Kaishitsu, Fukyoshi, and Seiga Senshi. He was from Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture). He is said to be the lay niece of Muso Soseki. He became a nun at the age of 17, and studied under Jikusen Bonsen and Seisetsu Shocho, and inherited the Dharma under Muso's guidance. He excelled in political and management skills, and lived at Toji Temple, Daikomyo Temple, and other temples, and restored Tenryu Temple and Rinsen Temple, which had burned down. In 1363 (Shohei 18, Joji 2), he lived at Tenryuji Temple, and in 1379 (Tenju 5, Kōryaku 1) at Nanzenji Temple. In the spring of the following year, 1380, he was given the title of Chikaku Fumyo Kokushi. He was subsequently appointed as the first Sorokushi by Emperor Go-En'yu. When Ashikaga Yoshimitsu founded Shokokuji Temple, he invited Muso to be the second abbot of the temple. He also built Zen temples in various places, contributing to the rise of the Muso school and working hard to publish the Gozan edition. He passed away on August 12, 1388 (Genchū 5, Kakei 2), at the age of 78. His works include "Fumyo Kokushi Sayings," "A Brief Summary of the Tenryū Chronology," "Muso Kokushi Nenpu," and "Unmon Ikkyoku."
