German novelist and poet. Born in Karlsruhe in southern Germany. He initially aspired to be a law scholar, but later visited Italy to study painting, where he met Paul Heyse and switched to literature. His epic poem in verse "The Trumpets of Säckingen" (1854) and his historical novel "Ekkehard" (1855), set in a 10th-century Swiss monastery, made him one of the most popular authors of the late 19th and 20th centuries.
