A village in Nakagami District, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located in the central-southern part of Okinawa Island (the main island), facing Nakagusuku Bay to the east. It was part of Nakagusuku Village until World War II, but after the war the village was divided into north and south by American military facilities, and was separated in 1946. Population: 15,023 (1995). The coastal area facing Nakagusuku Bay is fertile alluvial lowland, and the area behind it is hilly. Before World War II, it was a purely agricultural village, and was known as a village with many immigrants to Hawaii, Peru, Brazil, etc. 19% of the village's area is occupied by the American military base Camp Zukeran. 沖縄県中頭(なかがみ)郡の村。沖縄島(本島)中南部に位置し,東は中城湾に面する。第2次世界大戦まで中城村の一部であったが,戦後アメリカ軍の施設によって村が南北に分断されたため,1946年分離した。人口1万5023(1995)。中城湾に面する海岸一帯は肥沃な沖積低地で,背後は丘陵状の地形を呈する。第2次大戦前は純農村,またハワイ,ペルー,ブラジルなどへの移民の多い村として知られた。村面積の19%はアメリカ軍基地キャンプ瑞慶覧(ずけらん)が占めている。
