This refers to the reading (and the word) of a word consisting of two kanji characters, where the top character is read as on and the bottom character is read as kun, such as "juu (weight)/bako (box)." To distinguish it from words where the top character is read as kun and the bottom character is read as on, such as "yu (water)/tou (tub)," this is called yu-oke reading. Examples can be found as far back as the early Heian period, but their number increased in the Middle Ages and has continued to the present day. The term jubako reading appears to have originated in the Middle Ages and early modern periods, but in modern language, there are so many examples that it is not really considered to have any real meaning. "Kimochi (feeling)," "Ekiuri (station seller)," "Ichidoki (temporary)," "Shakuya (rented house)," and "Engumi (marriage)" are some examples that are very commonly used.
