A politician in the mid-Kamakura period. Tokiwai Shokoku. His Buddhist name was Jitsuku. His father was Kintsune and his mother was the daughter of Fujiwara Yoshiyasu. He served the Gotoba Dynasty and seven other Dynasties. After the Jōkyū War (1221), he succeeded his father, who had taken control of the Kamakura Shogunate's political affairs, as Daijō Daijin, and his two daughters were successively made Chūgū (empresses), and the two sons born to them were successively enthroned. In 1246 (Kangen 4), when Hojo Regent Tokiyori banished Shogun Yoritsugu's father Yoritsune to Kyoto, he was appointed Kanto Moushitsugi by Tokiyori's petition, a position he held throughout his life. As the Kanto no Shinji, Saneuji became a key figure in the relationship between the Imperial Court and the military as well as a maternal relative of the Imperial family, and the power of the Saionji family was further strengthened. Saneuji was also highly praised for his poetry and prose, and his waka poems were included in imperial anthologies such as the "Shin Choksen Wakashu".
