[1] [Noun] 1. A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It grows in grasslands in the low mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu . It is covered in silky hairs all over and reaches a height of 15-30 centimeters. It has thick, straight underground stems from which grow clumps of deeply pinnate leaves. In April and May, a flower stalk grows from the center of the leaves to a height of 10-40 centimeters, and at the tip of the stalk grows a six-petaled flower with a dark red interior and dense silky hair on the exterior. After flowering, the pistil grows long and tail-like, and together with the dense feathers, it resembles the silver hair of an old man. Chinese name: Hakutouou. Shaguma Saiko . Haguma. Obagashira. A compilation of facts the author saw and heard while he was a yoriki (police magistrate) at the Kyoto Magistrate's Office, as well as excerpts from old books dating back to the Middle Ages, with additional criticism. There is also a five-volume edition of excerpts published in 1784 ( Tenmei 4 ).
