An old city occupying the northeastern part of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1946. Since the Kagoshima Domain established a magistrate's office here, it has developed as the center of the Amami Islands (since March 2010, the Amami Archipelago). The city center is located at the back of a bay on the northwest coast, and is a trading port with direct sea routes to Okinawa, Kagoshima, and Hanshin, and is the center of transportation and shipping within the islands. One of the city's specialties is Oshima Tsumugi silk, but in recent years it has been in decline, and instead tourism development has progressed. In March 2006, it merged with Kasari Town and Sumiyou Village in Oshima County to become a city, Amami City. 127.52 km2 . Population: 41,922 (2003).
