Kiden style

A basic form of historical narrative in premodern China. It was invented in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian and was inherited by later "official histories." The Chronicles (Hongi) are chronicles, while the Biographies (Retsuden) are biographical histories. In general histories such as Records of the Grand Historian, Northern History, and Southern History, the Biographies give a chronological record of the main history of each dynasty, or the deeds of emperors or those of equivalent status. In the Han Shu, the Chronicles are imperial records that chronicle each emperor. In official histories, in addition to the Chronicles and Biographies, there are sometimes sections such as tables of various chronologies, records of history by field such as systems, arts and sciences, and economics, and sections on the family of feudal lords and warlords, and foreign history is generally incorporated into the Biographies section.

中国、前近代の基本的な歴史叙述の形式。司馬遷(しばせん)の『史記』で創案された体裁であり、後の「正史」に受け継がれた。紀（本紀(ほんぎ)）は年代記、伝（列伝(れつでん)）は人物史である。『史記』『北史(ほくし)』『南史(なんし)』などの通史の場合の本紀は、各王朝の大筋の歴史、または帝王ないしはそれに準じる者の事跡を編年体で記す。『漢書(かんじょ)』などの断代史の紀は、皇帝ごとの年代記としての帝紀(ていき)となる。正史の場合には、紀と伝のほかに、各種年表の表(ひょう)、制度・学芸・経済などの分野別の歴史である志(し)・書(しょ)、諸侯・群雄を別項としてたてる世家(せいか)などの部分が加えられることもあり、外国史は一般に伝の部分に編入された。
