Pegasos - Pegasos (English spelling)

A divine horse with wings in Greek mythology. Hesiod explains that it was named after Pegais (the spring of water) in Oceanus (the great ocean) at the western edge of the world, but it is thought that this name was inherited by the Greeks from the indigenous people. When Medusa, who was carrying Poseidon's seed, was decapitated by Perseus, Pegasus and Chrysaor were born from the cut. Pegasus was not given a human-made bit, but while drinking water from a spring, he was captured by Bellerophon, who had received the help of the gods of Athena, and became his riding horse. He helped Bellerophon in his battles against the Chimera, a goat monster that spits fire from its mouth, the brave Solimoi, and the female warrior Amazons. However, when Bellerophon tried to ride Pegasus up to the palace of Zeus in the sky, Pegasus shook off the arrogant rider and took over as the carrier of thunderbolts for Zeus.

The legend that a spring called Hippocrene (Horse's Well) gushed forth where Pegasus struck the ground with his hoof was passed down throughout Greece, including Mount Helicon, home of the Muses. During the Roman period, the winged horse was considered a symbol of immortality, and today the name of the constellation Pegasus remains.

ギリシア神話の翼をもつ神馬。ヘシオドスは、世界の西の果てオケアノス（大洋）のペガイ（水源）で生まれたためにこの名がつけられたと説明しているが、これはギリシア人が先住民族から受け継いだ名称と考えられている。ポセイドンの胤(たね)を宿していたメドゥサがペルセウスに首をはねられたとき、その切り口からペガソスとクリサオルが生まれ出た。ペガソスは人間の手になる馬銜(はみ)をかませられることはなかったが、泉で水を飲んでいるとき、アテネの神助を得たベレロフォンに捕らえられてその乗馬となった。そして、口から火を吐く山羊(やぎ)の怪獣キマイラや、勇猛なソリモイ人、女戦士アマゾンと戦うベレロフォンを助けた。しかし、ベレロフォンがペガソスを駆って天のゼウスの宮にまで昇ろうとしたとき、ペガソスは傲(おご)れる騎手ベレロフォンを振り落とし、ゼウスのために雷電を運ぶ役目についたとされる。

　ペガソスが蹄(ひづめ)で打った所にヒッポクレネ（馬の井）という泉が湧(わ)き出たという伝説は、ムーサイ（詩の女神たち）の住むヘリコン山をはじめ、ギリシア各地に伝わっていた。ローマ時代にはこの天馬は不死のシンボルとされ、今日ペガスス座にその名を残している。
