Evariste Lévy‐Provençal

A French Arabologist, he specialized in Islam in Spain and North Africa. He published various Arabic historical materials, and in 1931 published a new edition of Doge's History of Muslim Spain (1861), in four volumes. However, he was not satisfied with this and published three volumes of a History of Islamic Spain (1950-56) that was intended to be six volumes in total, but it was left unfinished at his death. He is also well known for his booklet Arab Civilization in Spain (1938), a compilation of lectures he gave at Cairo University.

フランスのアラビア学者。とりわけスペイン，北アフリカのイスラムを専門とした。各種アラビア語史料を刊行し，1931年にはドージの《スペイン･イスラム教徒史》4巻(1861)の新版を出したが，これに飽き足らず，自ら全6巻予定の《イスラム･スペイン史》を3巻(1950‐56)まで出したが，死去により未完に終わった。ほかにカイロ大学での講義をまとめた小冊子《スペインにおけるアラブ文明》(1938)もよく知られている。
