1874‐1956 A French Arabologist, he specialized in Islam in Spain and North Africa. He published various Arabic historical materials, and in 1931 published a new edition of Doge's History of Muslim Spain (1861), in four volumes. However, he was not satisfied with this and published three volumes of a History of Islamic Spain (1950-56) that was intended to be six volumes in total, but it was left unfinished at his death. He is also well known for his booklet Arab Civilization in Spain (1938), a compilation of lectures he gave at Cairo University. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
