NSC-68 - N.S.C. sixty-eight

After the end of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union fell into an increasingly tense relationship, and a tense hostile relationship continued that could have led to a war in which both sides participated. This conflict extended to almost the entire world and formed the basic axis of conflict in postwar international politics. This state is generally called the Cold War, in contrast to a hot war, in which the two nations actually fought each other. The Cold War, which had been the framework of international politics for more than 40 years since the end of the war, came to an end with the revolutions that collapsed the communist regimes in Eastern Europe in the fall of 1989, the unification of Germany in October 1990, and the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of 1991.
