Yoshisho - Kissho

A document used in ceremonies to celebrate the beginning of something. The style was specific to the type of ceremony. At the Imperial Court, auspicious documents were submitted to the Emperor on occasions such as the beginning of the New Year, the beginning of government, the beginning of a new era, and a new era. These documents included documents such as the Document on the Release of Annual Rice Taxes from Various Provinces, the Document on the Release of Offerings from Various Shrines, and the Document on the Opening of Real Estate Warehouses in Various Provinces. The Innocho (Court Office), the Empress Dowager, the Crown Prince, the Sekkanke (Regent's House of Representatives), and the Kugyo-ke (Court nobles) also used their own auspicious documents for ceremonies such as the beginning of the New Year, the beginning of the Administration Office, the beginning of the Inner Palace, and the arrival of soldiers in the palace. The Kamakura and Muromachi Shogunates also held ceremonies known as Yoshisho-Hajime, and the Muromachi Shogunate designated the three articles of Yoshisho (a letter of good fortune) written on the sleeves of the Shogun, including Shinto rituals, Noso (recommending agriculture), and Nogu (tax payment), as Yoshisho. The Yoshisho ceremony became widespread in society during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods.

物事の始めを祝う儀礼において用いられる文書。その様式は儀礼の種類別に特定されていた。朝廷では年始(としはじめ)・政始(まつりごとはじめ)・代始(だいはじめ)・改元などに天皇に吉書を奏聞する吉書奏を行い、それぞれ諸国年料米解文(しょこくねんりょうまいげぶみ)・諸社祭幣料奏文(しょしゃさいへいりょうそうぶみ)や諸国不動倉開勘解文(しょこくふどうそうかいかんげぶみ)等を吉書とした。院庁(いんのちょう)・中宮(ちゅうぐう)・東宮(とうぐう)・摂関家・公卿家(くぎょうけ)などでも年始・政所始(まんどころはじめ)・内覧始(ないらんはじめ)・着陣などの儀式ごとにそれぞれの吉書を用いた。また鎌倉・室町幕府でも吉書始と称される儀式が行われ、室町幕府は神事・農桑(のうそう)（勧農）・乃貢(のうぐ)（年貢）三か条の将軍袖判下文(そではんくだしぶみ)を吉書とした。吉書の儀礼は室町・戦国時代の社会に広く普及した。
