A general term for insects belonging to the order Odonata. Incomplete metamorphosis. Adults cannot fold their wings over their backs, and when flying, the front and back wings move separately. The compound eyes are large, and the antennae are very short. Unlike other insects, males have reproductive organs located on the second, third and ninth abdominal segments, and they mate in a unique posture. Most larvae (nymphs) are aquatic, but some live in moist mud near water or in sphagnum moss. The length of one generation can be as short as about six months or as long as several years, with the ancient dragonflies taking seven years. Adults mainly live near water where they originate, but many species migrate before maturing, and some travel back and forth between plains and high mountains, while others migrate from south to north every year due to the wind. They are divided into the Uniceroptera, which have almost the same shape of the front and back wings, the Anisoptera, which have different shapes, and the Ancient Dragonflies, which are in between, and include 27 families. There are approximately 5,000 species worldwide, with over 190 species found in Japan, including accidental and invasive species.
