Founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita as a manufacturer of wiring devices, the company expanded into light bulbs, radios, and other products, and was incorporated in 1935. After World War II, the company continued to grow rapidly with its televisions and refrigerators, and is now the leading home appliance manufacturer. The national brand is well known in Japan, and the company has expanded overseas under the Panasonic trademark. It has subsidiaries under its umbrella that handle communication devices, electronic devices, and electrical equipment materials.
