Founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita as a manufacturer of wiring devices, the company expanded into light bulbs, radios, and other products, and was incorporated in 1935. After World War II, the company continued to grow rapidly with its televisions and refrigerators, and is now the leading home appliance manufacturer. The national brand is well known in Japan, and the company has expanded overseas under the Panasonic trademark. It has subsidiaries under its umbrella that handle communication devices, electronic devices, and electrical equipment materials. In recent years, the company has been actively investing in information-related fields such as mobile phones and personal computers, and has also strengthened its semiconductor division. In 2004, the group began to restructure, including making Matsushita Electric Works a consolidated subsidiary. In October 2008, the company name was changed to Panasonic Corporation. The head office is in Kadoma City, Osaka Prefecture, and factories are located in Kadoma, Toyonaka, Ibaraki, and elsewhere. Capital in 2011 was 258.7 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 8.6926 trillion yen.
