A tradition of Islamic thought commonly known as "Sufism." The word originates from the Arabic word suf (wool), and mystics are called Sufis (those who wear coarse woolen clothing). It arose as a reaction against the accumulation of wealth, the formalism of religious leaders (ulama), and the rigidity of theological speculation, and developed from the 8th century onwards. It aimed to achieve a mystical experience of union called fana through various training. It has also been noted that it was influenced by Christianity, Neoplatonism, and Indian thought, including Buddhism. Rabi, Ghazali, Hallaj, Rumi, and Ibn al-'Arabi are known as influential thinkers, and there have been studies by Massignon, Nicholson, Corbin, and Izutsu Toshihiko.

一般に〈スーフィズムsufism〉の称で知られるイスラムの思想伝統。語源はアラビア語スーフ（羊毛）とされ，神秘家はスーフィー（羊毛の粗衣をまとう者）と呼ばれる。富の蓄積と宗教指導者（ウラマー）の形式主義，神学的思弁の硬直化などに対する反動として興り，８世紀以降展開された。さまざまな修行によるファナーと呼ばれる神秘的合一体験の獲得が目指された。キリスト教，新プラトン主義，仏教を含むインド思想などの影響も指摘される。ラービア，ガザーリー，ハッラージュ，ルーミー，イブン・アルアラビーらが有力思想家として知られ，マシニョン，ニコルソン，コルバン，井筒俊彦などによる研究がある。
