A tradition of Islamic thought commonly known as "Sufism." The word originates from the Arabic word suf (wool), and mystics are called Sufis (those who wear coarse woolen clothing). It arose as a reaction against the accumulation of wealth, the formalism of religious leaders (ulama), and the rigidity of theological speculation, and developed from the 8th century onwards. It aimed to achieve a mystical experience of union called fana through various training. It has also been noted that it was influenced by Christianity, Neoplatonism, and Indian thought, including Buddhism. Rabi, Ghazali, Hallaj, Rumi, and Ibn al-'Arabi are known as influential thinkers, and there have been studies by Massignon, Nicholson, Corbin, and Izutsu Toshihiko. → Related topics Mysticism | Sufi | Nicholson | Massignon Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
