A compound of barium and oxygen. It is also called heavy earth or baryta. It is obtained by thermal decomposition of hydroxides or nitrates, but since the dissociation pressure is low, industrially it is made by adding carbon to carbonate and heating it to over 1200℃ in an electric furnace.
