Barium oxide

Barium oxide

A compound of barium and oxygen. It is also called heavy earth or baryta. It is obtained by thermal decomposition of hydroxides or nitrates, but since the dissociation pressure is low, industrially it is made by adding carbon to carbonate and heating it to over 1200℃ in an electric furnace.

BaCO3 + C-->BaO + 2CO
It is a white solid with a hexagonal crystal structure. It has properties similar to calcium oxide, but is more chemically active, releasing a large amount of heat when it reacts with water or carbon dioxide to form barium hydroxide or barium carbonate. It dissolves in nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and anhydrous alcohol. When heated to about 550 °C in air, it becomes barium peroxide.

2BaO+ O2―2BaO2
In addition to being used as a raw material for producing barium hydroxide, it is also used as a dehydrating agent.

  BaCO3+C―→BaO+2CO
