1357‐1433 King of Portugal. Reigned 1385-1433. Founder of the Abis dynasty. Born as an illegitimate son of Pedro I, he was given the title of Grand Master of the Abis at the age of six. In 1383, upon the death of his half-brother King Ferdinand, Princess Beatrice, who had been married to King John I of Castile, ascended to the throne and Queen Leonor became regent. Dom João, Grand Master of the Abis, was supported by the anti-Leonor faction and assisted in the murder of her favorite, Count Andeiro. As a result, the country was divided into the Leonor faction, centered on the great nobles, and the Joan faction, supported by the middle and small nobles and the bourgeoisie, and anti-feudal popular uprisings broke out all over the country.
