King of Portugal. Reigned 1385-1433. Founder of the Abis dynasty. Born as an illegitimate son of Pedro I, he was given the title of Grand Master of the Abis at the age of six. In 1383, upon the death of his half-brother King Ferdinand, Princess Beatrice, who had been married to King John I of Castile, ascended to the throne and Queen Leonor became regent. Dom João, Grand Master of the Abis, was supported by the anti-Leonor faction and assisted in the murder of her favorite, Count Andeiro. As a result, the country was divided into the Leonor faction, centered on the great nobles, and the Joan faction, supported by the middle and small nobles and the bourgeoisie, and anti-feudal popular uprisings broke out all over the country.

ポルトガル王。在位1385‐1433年。アビス朝の創始者。ペドロ1世の庶子として生まれ，6歳でアビス騎士団長職を与えられた。1383年異母兄のフェルナンド王の死によってカスティリャ王フアン1世に嫁していた王女ベアトリスが即位し，王妃レオノルが摂政に就くと，アビス騎士団長ドン･ジョアンは反レオノル派に担ぎ出されて彼女の寵臣アンデイロ伯の殺害に手を貸した。この結果，国内は大貴族を中心とするレオノル派と中小貴族，ブルジョアジーに支援されたジョアン派に分裂し，全国各地に反封建的な民衆蜂起が起こった。
