Auxochrome

…A concept proposed by Otto Nikolaus Witt (1853-1915) in 1876 regarding aromatic chemistry, especially the color development of dyes. He said that for an organic compound to have color, first, it needs a chromophore, which is an atomic group containing an unsaturated bond in the molecule, and second, when a chromophore is bound to an aromatic compound, an auxochrome is further bound to the chromogen, which becomes a deep-colored dye that can be dyed into fibers. The phenomenon of dyeing is completely separate from color development, so it should be considered separately, but Witt's concept of chromophore and auxochrome is still very useful today for understanding the relationship between the chemical structure of pigments and color. …
