A genus of green algae in the Cladophoraceae family that grows in both marine and freshwater environments, it is characterized by a single filamentous, branched body and cells with many nuclei and a reticulated chloroplast. It has been confirmed that this genus undergoes alternation of generations between gametophytes, which form and release gametes with two flagella, and sporophytes, which have the same external appearance but form and release zoospores with four flagella. This life cycle of homotypic alternation of generations is specifically called the Cladophora type. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
