Kitayama-in Temple

Japanese:
Kitayama-in Temple
Year of death: November 11, 1419 (November 28, 1419)
Year of birth: Ōan 2/Shohei 24 (1369)
During the Muromachi period, she was the wife of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Her title was Hino Yasuko. She was the daughter of Hino Sukeyasu, and became the wife of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, around the beginning of the Oei era. She was called Shinden and Niidono. In 1406, when Tsuyomon'in, the birth mother of Emperor Gokomatsu, died, she became the quasi-mother of the Emperor. Because of this, Yoshimitsu, as the father of the Emperor, is said to have assumed the title of Cloistered Emperor after he became a monk, and to have run Kitayamadai as a Sen'do. When Yasuko was given the title in 1419, she was given the title of Inji. The title of Kitayama-in was chosen by Yoshimitsu, and on March 23 of the same year, the ceremony to welcome her into the Imperial Court was held with great pomp. However, after Yoshimitsu's death in 1420, she was not treated well by the next Shogun, Yoshimochi, and she spent her later years without the splendor of her past, dying at Kitayamadai Minamigosho. Even after her death, she was not treated as a mother of a nation, her funeral was abbreviated, and she was not subject to any public scrutiny or shame. The Kitayama-tei temple was also disposed of, and around 28th-29th year of the Oei era, the temple was renamed Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji).
