Ayatollah

In the Twelver Shiite sect, this title is given to high-ranking religious scholars (ulama). They are consulted by believers on the interpretation of Islamic law, receive direct donations, and maintain mosques, schools, and clinics. Particularly outstanding ones become Grand Ayatollahs, and among them the highest religious authority is called Marja-e Taqlid (source of imitation). シーア派の十二イマーム派で，高位の宗教学者（ウラマー）に与えられる称号。信徒からイスラム法の解釈について相談を受けるほか，直接献金を受け取り，モスクや学校，医院の維持にあたる。とくに優れた者は大アーヤトッラーとなり，さらにその中で宗教的な最高権威をマルジャエ・タクリード（模倣の源）と呼ぶ。
