...In addition to excellent weavers, there was also a need for excellent apprentices, and during the reign of Louis XIII (1610-43), S. Boué, the leading painter of the time, was appointed apprentice to the king. In 1662, during the reign of Louis XIV, Prime Minister Colbert purchased the Gobelins mansion in the king's name, and in 1667 he established the royal furniture factory Manufacture des meubles de la Couronne there, appointing the painter C. Le Brun as general director (this factory produced not only tapestries, but also furniture, gold and silver, jewellery and all other furnishings for the royal household). All tapestry workshops scattered throughout Paris were gathered here, placed under Le Brun's strict supervision, and a school for apprentices was also established. ...
