A monthly magazine first published in Boston in 1857, edited by JR Lowell. The essay series "The Dictator of the Breakfast Table" by OW Holmes, a regular contributor who gave the magazine its name, and other works were well received. At first it had a strong character as a literary magazine, mainly in New England, but from around the time of the Civil War it dealt with politics and current affairs, and after the war Ohio-born WD Howells became chief editor (1871-81), giving it a cultural breadth. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it has become less literary in character, and more focused on current affairs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
