A hominid excavated from North Africa. Three mandibles and a piece of a skull were discovered in Ternifine, Algeria, between 1954 and 1955. It has a fairly robust morphology and resembles the Peking hominid, so the discoverer, C. Arambourg, named it Atlantropus mauritanicus after the Atlas Mountains that stretch to the south of the discovery site. From the animal bones found, it was determined to be from the Early Camassian Rainy Period and belong to the beginning of the middle Pleistocene (Pleistocene). It was also found with a large number of stone tools from the Early Ashurean period, including a primitive double-sided hand axe and a scraper. The Rabat man, discovered near Casablanca, Morocco in 1933, and the Casablanca man (Sidi Abdel-Rahman), discovered in 1955, are also thought to be of the same type.
