Suzuki Mondo

A popular legend, and the name of a character in musical and dramatic works that have been adapted from it. The facts are unknown, but it is said that he was a samurai who lived in Aoyama, Edo, and committed suicide in 1801 (Kyowa 1) with a prostitute named Hashimotoya Shiraito from Naito Shinjuku. Around the Kaei era (1848-1854), his name became known when he was sung in the song "Yanre Kudoki" by blind female musicians, and he was also featured in Kiyomoto, Tokiwazu, and Yagibushi. The first Kabuki adaptation was "Sumidagawa tai Tsui no Kagamon" written by Sakurada Jisuke 3rd, which premiered in March 1852 (Kaei 5) at the Edo Ichimura-za Theatre. Rewrites include "Tsumakasanee Nishi no Iroage," "Suzuki Mainichi's Love White Thread," and "Koino Tayori Mainichi's Love Message," and among these, "Hyakuninmachi Ukina no Yomiuri" has been performed even in recent years and was selected as one of the "Ten Types of Koga" hit plays of Sawamura Sojuro 7th.

俗説、およびこれを脚色した音曲・戯曲上の人物名。事実は未詳だが、江戸青山に住んだ侍で、1801年（享和1）内藤新宿(ないとうしんじゅく)の娼妓(しょうぎ)橋本屋白糸(しらいと)と情死したといわれ、嘉永(かえい)（1848～54）ごろ、瞽女(ごぜ)の唄(うた)「ヤンレェくどき」に謡われて名が広まり、清元(きよもと)・常磐津(ときわず)や八木節(やぎぶし)にも扱われた。歌舞伎(かぶき)に脚色した最初は、1852年（嘉永5）3月江戸市村座初演、3世桜田治助(じすけ)作『隅田川対加賀紋(ついのかがもん)』で、書替え物に『褄重縁色揚(つまかさねえにしのいろあげ)』、『鈴木主水恋白糸(こいのしらいと)』『恋音便(こいのたより)主水白糸』などがあり、なかでも『百人町浮名読売(ひゃくにんまちうきなのよみうり)』は近年でも上演され、7世沢村宗十郎の当り芸「高賀(こうが)十種」に選ばれている。
