A village in Yama District, located in northern Fukushima Prefecture, stretching from the northeastern edge of the Aizu Basin to the northern foot of Mt. Bandai and the southwest of Mt. Azuma. Following the eruption of Mt. Bandai in 1888, many rivers, including the Nagase River, were dammed, forming a large number of lakes and marshes. After the war, this area was called "Ura-Bandai" and tourism development progressed rapidly, with campsites, resort hotels, hot spring facilities, and walking trails. A ski resort was also opened and the area is crowded with tourists all year round. Lake Hibara, the largest of the dammed lakes, has a sightseeing boat service during the snow-free season. These tourist spots are connected by tourist roads such as National Route 459, the "Mt. Bandai Gold Line," and the "Bandai Azuma Lake Line." 234.08 km2 . 3,185 people (2010).
