Naoki Kano

Naoki Kano

A Chinese scholar from the Taisho to early Showa periods. His pen name was Shion and he went by the pen name Junzan. He was born in Kumamoto on January 18, 1868. After graduating from Seiseiko, he entered the Department of Chinese Literature at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University (the precursor to the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo), where he studied under Shimada Koson and graduated in 1895 (Meiji 28). In 1900 (Meiji 33), he studied in Beijing, where he experienced the Boxer Rebellion. In 1906, he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Letters of Kyoto Imperial University, where he taught courses on the history of Chinese philosophy and Chinese language and literature until his retirement in 1928 (Showa 3). During this time, he was awarded a doctorate in literature and a member of the Imperial Academy. After his retirement, he was appointed director of the Kyoto Institute of Oriental Culture (the precursor to the Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University). In 1944, he was awarded the Order of Culture. He passed away on December 23, 1947 at his home in Kyoto. His grave is located next to the Manjusri Pagoda at Konkai-Komyoji Temple. He was friends with foreign scholars such as Luo Zhenyu and Wang Guowei from China and France's Pelliot, and in the field of classics, he established the foundation of Qing Dynasty historical research, and in literature, he studied plays and novels and investigated the Dunhuang documents, making a great contribution to bringing a breath of fresh air to Chinese studies in Japan.

大正~昭和初期の中国学者。字(あざな)は子温(しおん)。君山と号する。慶応(けいおう)4年正月18日、熊本に生まれる。済済黌(せいせいこう)を卒業後、帝国大学文科大学(東京大学文学部の前身)漢学科に入学、島田篁村(しまだこうそん)に師事し、1895年(明治28)卒業。1900年(明治33)北京(ペキン)に留学、義和団事件にあう。1906年京都帝国大学文科大学教授に任ぜられ、1928年(昭和3)定年退官に至るまで、支那(しな)哲学史あるいは支那語学支那文学講座を担当、この間、文学博士、帝国学士院会員となる。退官後、東方文化学院京都研究所(京都大学人文科学研究所の前身)所長に就任。1944年文化勲章を授けられた。昭和22年12月23日、京都の自宅にて没。墓所は金戒光明寺(こんかいこうみょうじ)の文殊塔そばにある。中国の羅振玉(らしんぎょく/ルオチュンユイ)、王国維(おうこくい/ワンクオウェイ)やフランスのペリオなど外国の学者と親交があり、経学では清朝(しんちょう)考証学を祖述し、文学では戯曲・小説の研究や敦煌(とんこう)文書の調査など、日本の中国学に新風を吹き込んだ功績は大きい。
