An old town on the southwestern tip of Sado Island, Sado County, Niigata Prefecture. In the early modern period, the city center flourished as the loading port for the Sado Gold Mine and an important port for westbound shipping. Since the Meiji period, it has declined as its prosperity was overtaken by Ryotsu Port. A sea route connects it with Naoetsu in Joetsu City. Tobacco leaf, persimmons, and vegetable cultivation are thriving. Bamboo crafts are a specialty. Part of the Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park. In March 2004, Ryotsu City merged with Sado County's Aikawa Town, Sawada Town, Kanai Town, Niiho Village, Hatano Town, Mano Town, Hamo Town, and Akadomari Village to form Sado City. 25.96 km2 . 3,850 people (2003).
