This was a representative colonial newspaper published during Japan's occupation of Taiwan, with its headquarters in Taipei. Two Japanese-language newspapers were first published in Taiwan in 1896 (Meiji 29): the Taiwan Newspaper and the Taiwan Daily Newspaper. The former was run by Daikichirō Tagawa and the latter by Konan Naito, and they held major debates about Japan's policy of governing Taiwan. In 1898, they merged to form the Taiwan Nichi-nichi Shinpo (president Moriya Zenbei). In the same area, there were other newspapers based in Taichung, such as the Taiwan Newspaper (first published as the Taichung Mainichi Shimbun in 1901, with a new title in 1907) and the Taiwan Daily Newspaper (first published as the Tainan Shimpo in 1899, with a new title in 1937), but the Taiwan Nichi-nichi Shinpo distributed the Taiwan Governor-General's Office Newspaper, the Taipei Prefectural Newspaper by the Taipei Prefectural Office, and the Taipei City Newspaper by the city hall as supplements, and wielded influence as a quasi-publicity paper for the colonial apparatus.
