A commercial and industrial city in northern Sindh province, central Pakistan. Population 350,000 (1991). Located on the west bank of the Indus River. The Indus narrows to a width of 1.6 km at Sukkur due to exposed bedrock, and has been used as a crossing point. It is an opposite city to Rohri on the opposite bank. There is the Sukkur (Lloyd) Barrage (completed in 1932), and seven irrigation canals irrigate an area of 2 million hectares. Rice, wheat, cotton, dates, etc. are distributed here, and industries such as spinning, cement, riverboat building, and oil refining are located here.
