Takakatsuya - Koukokukyo

A Chinese painter from the Yuan dynasty. His pen name was Yanjing. He is one of the leading painters of the early Yuan dynasty, along with Zhao Mengfu and Qian Xuan, who promoted the restoration movement, and is known for his landscapes and bamboo paintings in ink. His ancestors are said to be Uighurs, and he served the Yuan dynasty early on, becoming Minister of Justice. He studied landscape paintings by Mi Fu and his son Mi Youn, who lived at the end of the Northern Song dynasty, and incorporated Dong Yuan, Ju Ran, and others into their style, creating a typical Mi-style landscape painting from the Yuan dynasty onwards. An example of his work is "Beautiful Mountains Across the Clouds" at the National Palace Museum in Taipei. He also studied bamboo painting under the Jin painter Wang Tingyun. In Japan, there is a surviving work called "Small Scroll of Landscapes," which is said to have been copied by Sesshu and given to his disciple. There is also a theory that this is the same person as Kounenki, who became known in Japan after the Muromachi period.

中国、元(げん)代の画家。字(あざな)は彦敬(げんけい)。復古運動を推進した趙孟頫(ちょうもうふ)、銭選らとともに元の前期を代表する画家で、山水と墨竹において知られる。祖先はウイグルの出といわれ、彼は早く元朝に仕え、刑部尚書になった。山水画は北宋(ほくそう)末の米芾(べいふつ)・米友人父子の山水を学び、その山水様式に董源(とうげん)、巨然(きょねん)らを取り入れて、元代以降の米法山水画の典型をつくりだした。その作例に台北・国立故宮博物院の『雲横秀嶺図(うんおうしゅうれいず)』があげられる。また墨竹は金の画家王庭筠(おうていいん)を学んでいる。日本には雪舟が高克恭を模して弟子に与えたという『山水小巻』が現存。室町以降日本で知られた高然暉(こうねんき)と同一人物とする説もある。
