The community was founded in Oneida, central New York, in 1848 by John H. Noyes (1811-1886), a religious leader who believed that he would attain perfection through the Second Coming of Christ. It attracted about 300 followers (called Perfectionists), promoted self-governance by renouncing self-interest and mutual criticism, and gained a good reputation for its schools and products. However, its free-love system of "mixed marriages" drew strong criticism, and in 1879 it finally adopted monogamy, and the community was then reorganized into a corporation, effectively disappearing.
