(Aleksandros) King of Macedonia. Son of Philip II. He studied under Aristotle as a boy and became king at the age of 20. After pacifying the Greek cities, he invaded Persia, defeated the Persian army under King Darius, and advanced his army to the banks of the Indus River, building an unprecedentedly large empire. He built cities in various parts of the conquered territories and created the foundations of Hellenistic culture by fusing Eastern and Western cultures and peoples. Alexander the Great. (Aleksandros) マケドニア王。フィリッポス二世の子。少年時代アリストテレスの教えを受け、二〇歳で王となる。ギリシア諸都市を平定した後ペルシアに遠征し、ダレイオス(ダリウス)王のペルシア軍を破ってインダス河畔にまで軍を進め、空前の大帝国を築く。征服地の諸所に都市を建設し、東西の文化、民族の融合をはかってヘレニズム文化の基礎をつくった。アレキサンダー大王。(前三五六‐前三二三)
