Rehmannia glutinosa is a Chinese herbal medicine that strengthens and restores the blood, and Rehmannia glutinosa sellers are medicine sellers who formed a group with the Bureau of Medicine as their headquarters and were granted the privilege of selling Rehmannia glutinosa. In the Muromachi period "Thirty-two Artisans' Poetry Contest," a Rehmannia glutinosa seller is depicted wearing a craftsman's hat and carrying a small pail on the end of a pole. Its origins are thought to lie in the medicine houses of the Bureau of Medicine, which, under the Ritsuryo system, provided herbal medicines from various provinces and prepared various medicines for the Emperor, various offices, and various ministers. In particular, the formation of Rehmannia glutinosa sellers was deeply connected to an Imperial Court event known as "Gyoyaku" (offering medicines).
