A powerful family that branched off from the prestigious House of Lorraine, a noble family in Europe. Its origins date back to 1528, when Claude, the younger brother of Anthony of Lorraine, fought under King Francis I of France and was awarded the Duchy of Guise in recognition of his military achievements. Since the Duchy of Lorraine was an independent principality until it was annexed to France in 1735, the House of Guise, which was related to it, was still considered a semi-foreign power and was often viewed with suspicion, even though it became a French noble family.
