Kusakabe Kukou

...A patriot during the late Edo period. His given name was Tsubasa and his pen name was Kugo. He was born in the territory of the Mito domain, where his father, a samurai of the Satsuma domain, was staying. He later went to Edo and became a retainer of the shogunate vassal Kawaji Seimo, calling himself Miyazaki Fukutaro. In 1855 (Ansei 2), he was recognized by Shimazu Nariakira and employed at the Satsuma domain's Edo residence. In July 1858, he went to Tokyo by order of the domain. On August 8, a secret imperial decree was issued expressing regret over the shogunate's signing of the treaty (the Bogo no Himitsu Ikki). Mito domain samurai Ukai Kokichi delivered this secret imperial decree via the Tokaido road, and Kusakabe delivered a copy of it via the Kiso road to the Mito domain's Edo residence. ...

…幕末期の志士。諱（いみな）は翼，号は九皐。薩摩藩士であった父が寄寓していた水戸藩領に生まれる。のち江戸に出て幕臣川路聖謨の従士となり，宮崎復太郎と称した。1855年(安政2)島津斉彬に認められ，薩摩藩江戸藩邸に召し抱えられた。58年7月，藩命により上京。8月8日，幕府の条約調印は遺憾であるという内容の密勅が発せられた(戊午の密勅)。水戸藩士鵜飼幸吉は，この密勅を東海道経由で，日下部はその写しを木曾路経由で，それぞれ江戸の水戸藩邸へ届けた。…
