...A patriot during the late Edo period. His given name was Tsubasa and his pen name was Kugo. He was born in the territory of the Mito domain, where his father, a samurai of the Satsuma domain, was staying. He later went to Edo and became a retainer of the shogunate vassal Kawaji Seimo, calling himself Miyazaki Fukutaro. In 1855 (Ansei 2), he was recognized by Shimazu Nariakira and employed at the Satsuma domain's Edo residence. In July 1858, he went to Tokyo by order of the domain. On August 8, a secret imperial decree was issued expressing regret over the shogunate's signing of the treaty (the Bogo no Himitsu Ikki).
