September Party

...The bourgeoisie, who had lost the Brazilian colony, bought the land and became rural landowners, joining forces with the old aristocracy and coming to be known as the Charter Party, a conservative faction under the constitutional monarchy. In September 1836, a radical group (the September Party), mainly made up of industrial capitalists, craftsmen, and small merchants, started a revolution demanding protective tariffs for domestic industry and restoring the 1822 Constitution. In 1842, Antonio Bernardo da Costa Cabral (1803-89) of the Charter Party came to power, but his modernization policies provoked a backlash from the conservative northern peasants, and in 1846, a rare popular uprising in Portugal, known as the Maria da Fonte Rebellion, occurred.
