A collection of critical essays by the French female writer Madame de Stael. The first edition, published in 1810, was destroyed by Napoleon, and published in London in 1813. It was the result of Madame de Stael's two exiles to Germany, and consists of four parts: Customs of the German People, Literature and Art, Philosophy and Morals, and Religion and Passion. It aimed to import romantic northern literature, and defined Romanticism as indigenous literature and Classicism as transplanted literature. It also had a decisive influence on the formation of French Romanticism by introducing the idealistic German spirit of the "Sturm und Drang" (the Stormy Period) represented by Goethe, Schiller, and others.

フランスの女流文学者スタール夫人の評論。 1810年の初版はナポレオンによって破棄され，13年ロンドンで刊行。夫人の2度のドイツ亡命の結果として生れ，ドイツ国民の習俗，文学と芸術，哲学と道徳，宗教と熱情の4部から成る。ロマン的な北方文学の移入を意図し，ロマン主義を土着の文学，古典主義を移植の文学と規定，「シュトゥルム・ウント・ドラング (疾風怒濤時代) 」のゲーテ，シラーなどに代表される理想主義的なドイツ精神の紹介によって，フランス・ロマン主義の形成に決定的な影響を与えた。
