Born: September 3, 1900, Pieravesi
Died: August 31, 1986, Helsinki Finnish politician. After graduating from the University of Helsinki, he became a lawyer. From 1927 to 1931, he was an advisor to the Municipal Union, from 1933 to 1936, he was an administrative officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, and from 1936, he became a member of parliament belonging to the Farmers' Party. He served as Minister of Justice from 1936 to 1937, Minister of the Interior from 1937 to 1939, Minister of Justice again from 1944 to 1946, Speaker of Parliament from 1948 to 1950, and then intermittently as Prime Minister from 1950 to 1956, and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1954. He was elected President in 1956, and was re-elected three times. He served as President until 1978 under a special law in 1973, and was elected for a fourth term in 1978, before resigning in 1981. He succeeded the previous President J. Paasikivi, and made every effort to improve relations with the Soviet Union, with which Finland fought twice during World War II, and was a symbol of Finland's neutral diplomacy.

フィンランドの政治家。ヘルシンキ大学を卒業後,弁護士となった。 1927~31年地方自治体連合顧問,33~36年農業省行政官,36年以降農民党所属の国会議員となった。 36~37年法相,37~39年内相,44~46年再び法相,48~50年国会議長を歴任ののち,50~56年の間に断続的に首相,54年外相に就任。 56年大統領に選出され,その後3選。 73年特別法により,78年まで大統領職をつとめ,78年4選,81年辞任。前大統領 J.パーシキビのあとをうけ,第2次世界大戦中2度にわたり交戦したソ連との関係改善に全力をあげ,フィンランドの中立主義外交の象徴的存在であった。
