A city in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1941. It is located at the base of the Izu Peninsula, east of Numazu City, and occupies the lowlands of the Kano River basin and the southwest foot of the Hakone volcano. The town center was the site of the ancient Izu Kokufu and Kokubunji temple, and later prospered as a post town at the shrine of Mishima Taisha Shrine and a key location on the Tokaido Hakone crossing. It is served by the Tokaido Main Line and the Shinkansen, and is the starting point of the Izu Hakone Railway Sunzu Line, making it a tourist base for Hakone and the Izu Peninsula. The city makes use of its abundant underground water to produce electrical equipment, general machinery, and food products. It is home to the National Institute of Genetics and Rakujuen Garden (a scenic spot and natural monument). It has an area of 62.02 km2 and a population of 111,838 (2010). →Related topics Shimizu [town] | Nagaizumi [town] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
