Otis
American mechanical engineer and inventor. Born in Vermont. In 1852 he exhibited an elevator car safety device at the World's Fair in New York, and founded an elevator company the following year in 1853. In 1857 he installed a passenger elevator in a New York store. In 1861 he invented a steam elevator with a safety device, obtained a patent for it, and founded the Otis Elevator Company. In addition to inventing the electric elevator (realized in 1889), he also invented the steam tiller and railway brakes. His company flourished during the high-rise building boom at the time.

Otis

American lawyer and politician. Born in Massachusetts. Active in the early stages of the American Revolution, he wrote pamphlets outlining legal theories that defended the rights of colonists. He influenced the resistance movement against British policy after 1774, but was seriously injured in an attack by opponents and spent his later years in obscurity.
