(1) A style of ancient document. A document in which a higher-ranking official writes his or her decision, certification, or approval on the sleeve or inside of a petition such as a moshijo or gejo. In the Heian period, when transferring private land, a ge was submitted to the kokushi (provincial governor) for approval and had to be judged by the provincial governor, and this was usually written in the margin of the ge. In the Kamakura Shogunate, when land was transferred to vassals, the Shogunate would issue official letters and official orders to confirm the transfer, but from 1303 (Kagen 1), instead of issuing official letters to confirm the transfer, the transfer was confirmed by writing a letter in the form of an official order with the seal of the regent and cosigner on the sleeve of the transfer letter submitted by the applicant. This is called the "outside title of confirmation." (2) The title written on the cover of a hanging scroll, book, etc. It can be written directly on the cover, or on a long, thin piece of paper (title label) that is pasted on the outside edge of the cover or scroll. (3) The title of a Kabuki or Joruri script. The title of a play. This is the name used mainly in Kamigata and called nadai in Edo.
