Mimetic crystal

Japanese: 擬晶 - ぎしょう（英語表記）mimetic crystal

When a crystal has a higher degree of symmetry than the crystal system to which it belongs due to the development of twins, the crystal is called a pseudocrystal. For example, nepheline and cordierite belong to the orthorhombic crystal system, but due to the development of twins they have the appearance of a hexagonal crystal system. Pseudocrystals are generally easy to distinguish by examining their optical properties.

結晶が双晶の発達により，それ自身の属する晶系の対称より対称度を高め，高次の対称をもつように見える場合，その結晶を擬晶という。たとえば，霞石，菫青石は斜方晶系に属するが，双晶の発達により六方晶系の外見を示す。擬晶は一般に光学性を調べることにより，容易に判別される。
