Forbidden Eight Banners

… As the Qing Dynasty expanded, the number of Mongolians and Han Chinese among the Eight Banners increased, so in 1635 (the 9th year of Tenso), the Eight Mongolian Banners were separated from the Eight Manchu Banners, and in 1642 (the 7th year of Sutoku), the Eight Han Military Banners were established. When the Qing Dynasty established its capital in Beijing in 1644, the soldiers of the Eight Banners also moved to Beijing and its suburbs, and became known as the Eight Banners of Forbidden Travel or the Beijing Banners. They were then dispatched to key locations in the provinces and stationed there, and were known as the Eight Banners for Defense. …
