In Greek mythology, he was a handsome giant hunter. He is said to have been killed by the wrath of the goddess Artemis, or to have been stung by a scorpion. After his death, he rose to the sky and became a constellation. Orion is a manned spacecraft being developed by NASA. Research began in 2004 as part of the Constellation program. It is not a shuttle-type vehicle, but rather a capsule-type vehicle as seen in the Apollo spacecraft. It was planned to carry up to six people and be used for docking with the International Space Station, as well as for exploring the Moon and Mars. The Constellation program was canceled in 2010, but the Orion MPCV, a multipurpose manned airship succeeding the Orion program, will be unmanned and carried on the next large rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), scheduled for launch in 2020.
