A power generating dam located on the Mimikawa River in Shiiba Village, Higashiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. Completed in 1955, it is Japan's first large-scale concrete arch dam, with a total storage capacity of 91,550,000 cubic meters. Construction was extremely difficult due to the granite bedrock and the frequent typhoons that strike every year, resulting in the deaths of 105 construction workers. The dam lake was named Hyuga Shiiba Lake by novelist Eiji Yoshikawa. Source: About Shogakukan Digital Daijisen Plus Information |
