...A perennial fern of the Caprifoliaceae family (illustration). It is evergreen, but in cold regions it becomes summer-green. The rhizomes creep long and often form large colonies. The leaf blades are long to broadly ovate, bipinnate and compound, and the larger ones can be over 1m long. The upper parts of the pinnae and pinnae are gradually pointed, the lateral veins are reticulated, and the vein ends do not reach the bottom of the serrated leaf margin. It is often found in moderately deep, slightly moist soils in warm areas south of Honshu, and since it matches well with the location conditions of Japanese cedar forests, it is sometimes used as an indicator for reforestation.
