Athos (English spelling)

Japanese: アトス（英語表記）Áthos

The name refers to the Aktí Peninsula, the most northeastern of the three peninsulas jutting out from the Chalkidiki region southeast of the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. It is a long, narrow peninsula about 40 km long with a varied topography, and at its tip lies the rocky peak of Mount Athos (2,033 m above sea level). The name Athos was already widely known in the ancient world, and can be found in Homer's Iliad and Herodotus' Histories. However, when people refer to Athos or Mount Athos today, they usually refer to the entire peninsula as an autonomous state of Greek Orthodoxy, rather than simply to the name of the place.
