Art Students League

The school opened in New York in 1875 as a drawing class for the National Academy of Design, which was founded in 1826, and has flourished since William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) opened a painting class there in 1878. In 1892, it moved to West 57th Street, where it remains today. It is known for producing many outstanding artists with its liberal curriculum. T. Eakins, R. Henri, and John Sloan (1871-1951) were among its students, and Japanese students included Takamura Kotaro, Kuniyoshi Yasuo, and Shimizu Noriyuki.

1826年設立のナショナル･アカデミー･オブ･デザインの素描教室としてニューヨークで75年に開設され，78年チェースWilliam Merritt Chase(1849‐1916)が絵画教室を開いて以来，盛況を呈した。92年，西57丁目に移って今日に至っている。自由なカリキュラムで優れた美術家を数多く生んだことで知られる。T.イーキンズ，R.ヘンライ，スローンJohn Sloan(1871‐1951)などが教え，日本人では高村光太郎，国吉康雄，清水登之などが学んだ。
