The school opened in New York in 1875 as a drawing class for the National Academy of Design, which was founded in 1826, and has flourished since William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) opened a painting class there in 1878. In 1892, it moved to West 57th Street, where it remains today. It is known for producing many outstanding artists with its liberal curriculum. T. Eakins, R. Henri, and John Sloan (1871-1951) were among its students, and Japanese students included Takamura Kotaro, Kuniyoshi Yasuo, and Shimizu Noriyuki.
