Substorms

A magnetospheric storm is a process in which energy that flows into the magnetosphere due to the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field is explosively consumed in the auroral oval region, and refers to the basic form of a large-scale electromagnetic disturbance phenomenon that occurs throughout the Earth's magnetosphere. The concept of a substorm was first introduced by Shunichi Akasofu in 1964 as a result of summarizing the time-dependent development process of auroras and polar magnetic field fluctuations. Later, as satellite observations progressed and the connection between auroral phenomena and magnetospheric disturbances became clear, the term came to be used as a general concept from the standpoint of attempting to understand magnetospheric phenomena in a unified way. ...
